Evaluation. Print

For the research aspect, defining where the the package should be inform, instruct, promote or persuade was particularly good. I had collected a large amount of information for both the history, and primary research that could of taken the package in either direction. Each aspect was considered and if it was useful, developing ideas in each aspect to try and collecting feedback.

I have to admit production media in some areas was limited. Processes were researched and considered although I already had a clear idea on the look I wanted to produce for the final idea, through research of existing products and packaging that I felt worked for the design. I would of liked to include some more processes and experimented but with problems with time management, this wasn’t possible. This isn’t saying I’m not happy with the final design.

Idea development was good, experimenting largely with sketch models worked well, to make sure text was readable at the correct scale, labels at the right scale, enough room for information, clear enough and if colours worked well. Investigating existing packaging and techniques in order to produce function design.

Documentation, organisation and presentation of the work was good this year, kept with my large sheets way of working allowing ideas to be placed quickly and easily, boards weren’t a problem and containing information throughout my blog, which I found much more useful this module with separate blogs than just one. My one problem as the pdf. A new format for this particular module. I can see the point of it, its great to look over your work and self-assess although I felt I’ve missed some work with having to include everything. I suppose once I receive feedback, this will help improve my next module hand in, if it is implemented.

I feel my design was successful. The labels kept to the intentions and considerations I stated, followed an informed approach and included 2 print processes, which also kept to considerations I stated.

Colour theory.

From the crit on wednesday, I was asked to investigate further what colours to decide on and how I made the decision on which colours I chose, and to be honest I wasn't too far off. Taken from versa creative, this gives a simple explanation of colour theory and their meanings. Click the image for a larger view. Now, I will re consider the colour choices I have made to make the labels more successful.

Crit round up.

Little round up of some work so far with the good brief, coming on quite well and sort of to plan, with what I wanted to achieve. I used to always over complicate designs and wanted to just get back to basics and make it work. 'Less is more' is a phrase i've adopted and is quite obvious here. I wanted just type, and maybe only one colour to the design, try and use the techniqes and theories learnt in the type workshops with have had, letting emotions come through with a typeface, and the use of colour. Through surveys and experimentation to form initial designs for the 'emotions' teas (name not final) Ideally I would want each typeface different to truly define each tea but they're not. This will change, but the each have their own characteristics and hopefully the typeface relates with the word, so you think of mellow when you read it, slightly curved, lighter weight and the colour is relaxed.

Overall the work went quite well, and I was only brought up on things I didn't have with me, my blog for one with all the contextual research. the designs themselves just need to be developed further, a better connection between the labels, choice of container, more information on the label and just basically continuing with the project and make decisions.

Daft blogger has made the images blurry and the actual designs are very crisp. Silly blogger

Label sketch models

To save on packaging and reflect on Coffee packaging, I thought about just having a single label applied to a tin/jar in which tea would be placed. This would be a first purchase then you buy tea in less packaging and refill the jar/tin. I wanted as a basis for development to see how the labels work on the jars, what works and what doesn't. Just a few sketch models to start with.

What is good? Statement.

Tea - because of its varieties available.

The chosen method is inform. From research there is no need to persuade people to drink tea, because of the amount that is already drank, promoting tea didn't seem appropriate but informing seemed interesting. The amount of variety available is amazing and from what I have found people usually only drink one or two types of tea, because they are unsure what else to drink.

Cue luke!

People don't hate Tea.

To justify convincing people to drink tea for 'persuade' for the next next part of the brief is just not needed. Looking on plenty of forums, fan sites and websites it seems not many people don't actually like tea. On average half the posts on a Forum for 'I hate tea' would infact be people saying they like tea and trying to convince the rest, or just that they don't like tea apart from a particular type of tea.

Instruct sketch model

For alot of work all ive seem to do is mailshots, and little packs to help people, and here is another example.. As a way of instructing people on how to make a cup of tea, I thought of making 5 step guide trying to keep things simple and easy. The idea is you place everything you need around your mug in the middle and work round in a circle. The instructions would include tea bags/sugar ready and anything else depending on the type of tea (lemon for earl grey)

Lots of tea.

I bought lots of tea, to explore whats available, try some more new flavours, check out the packaging and learn a little more about tea. At the moment They just seem to be boxed with maybe a nice graphic on the side. Hopefully something will be done about this in the next part of the brief.
